Import and export

  • TRichView exports DocX, RTF, HTML, text files, Unicode text files.
  • TRichView imports RTF, text files, Unicode text files.
  • TRichView saves and loads* documents in its format (RVF - RichView Format) and XML (when using ).
  • TRichView can use Microsoft® Office converters and third-party components to import and export to other file formats.

* - under saving and loading operations are understood that preserve 100% of the content and design of the document; exported, and then again imported documents may differ from the original.

RTF (Rich Text Format)

RTF (Rich Text Format) is a file format that allows different word processors on different operating systems to exchange rich text and graphics with each other.

Advantages of RTF:

  • it is a widely used format; many applications support it, including WordPad and Microsoft Word;
  • In this format you can store complex formatting, pictures, tables, hyperlinks, Unicode text.

Disadvantages of RTF:

  • files of this format usually take up a lot of space (because they contain several different representations of the same document fragments, pictures are encoded with text, non-English characters are written uneconomically);
  • it cannot store some TRichView-specific information; Pictures of not all graphic formats can be saved in RTF - they are converted to metafiles or bitmaps.

TRichView allows programmers to write their own code to save controls inserted into a document in RTF, as well as to read and write hyperlinks.
TRichView imports RTF files with bitmaps, Png images, 16- and 32-bit metafiles, Jpeg images, external images (from separate files).
TRichView imports RTF files with tables.
TRichView can copy RTF to the Windows clipboard, and TRichViewEdit can both copy and paste RTF.
RTF codes and use them to insert keywords (commands) into RTF.

DocX (Office Open XML)

DocX files contain documents in the Office Open XML format (also known as OOXML or OpenXML). This is a modern format used primarily by Microsoft Word (since Microsoft Office 2007), but other office products can also work with this format.

Technically, a DocX file is a collection of XML files and graphics packaged into a single ZIP archive. It contains almost the same information as RTF files, with minor differences: for example, more graphic formats are supported.

DocX files are relatively small because they contain less redundant information, contain images in their original format, and because all content is zipped.

TRichView can export DocX files.
You can define some text styles like DocX codes and use them to insert XML tags into DocX.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)

HTML is the language of the Internet.
TRichView saves beautiful and compact HTML code in two modes: traditional "old-fashioned" (with tags ,) and using Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)
CSS is a modern style sheet mechanism that allows authors to specify styles (i.e. fonts, colors, element sizes) in HTML documents without changing their internal structure.
HTML with CSS looks almost exactly the same as the original TRichView document when rendered in new browsers.

Depending on the settings, the HTML saved by RichView complies with the standards HTML 4.01 Transitional or HTML 4.01 Strict. In addition, saving XHTML is possible.

TRichView exports HTML as a text file with HTML code and a set of image files. By default, all images are converted to Jpeg (except Gif and Png images). You can specify a list of additional graphic formats that should not be converted, and you can also completely change the saving process using component event handling (and, for example, save all images in Png format).
Using a special event, TRichView allows you to save controls inserted into a document into HTML. TRichView can save HTML to streams (TStreams) instead of a file. Moreover, only the contents of the HTML body can be written, allowing them to be used as part of larger HTMLs when creating complex HTML editing and generation programs.
You can define some text styles like HTML codes and use them to insert tags into HTML.

Currently, TRichView does not have its own methods for importing HTML.
But you can use free components to import HTML into TRichView.

Text files

TRichView writes and reads text files in traditional (ANSI) encoding or Unicode. You can also copy and paste these formats from the clipboard.

RVF (RichView Format)

TRichView has its own format for recording documents. This format is compact, simple and can store all possible information about a TRichView document.
There are a number of settings for reading and writing RVF. For example, formatting (ie, collections of text and paragraph styles) can be saved with or separately from RVF documents.
TRichView can copy and paste RVF from the clipboard.

XML (Extensible Markup Language)

PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format)

TRichView does not have its own methods for saving PDF documents, but can use components from other manufacturers for this (see):

  • eDocEngine (can also export to other formats)

HTML import test (HTML import converter is no longer available)

Microsoft Office text converters

TRichView can use Microsoft Office text converters using the component TRVOfficeConverter.
Import converters convert various file formats (including DOCX) into RTF, which is then read by TRichView. Export converters convert saved RichView RTF into various file formats.

If the .RVF file is known to your system, then you can open it by double-clicking the mouse or pressing ENTER. This operation will launch applications associated with the .RVF file installed on the system. If the system encounters a file for the first time and there are no corresponding associations, the action will end with the system prompting you to find the corresponding software on your computer or on the Internet.

Sometimes it happens that the wrong program is assigned to serve the .RVF file type. This happens as a result of the action of hostile programs such as viruses or malware, but most often it is the result of an application being mistakenly associated with the .RVF file extension. If, when servicing a new .RVF file type, we specify the wrong program to the system, the system will erroneously recommend its use whenever a file of this type is encountered. In this case, you should try to select the appropriate application again. Right-click on the .RVF file, and then select from the menu the option "Open With..." and then "Choose default program". Now select one of the installed applications from the above list and try again.

Manual editing of the Windows Registry

If our system cannot cope with the .RVF extension and all automatic and semi-automatic methods of teaching it this art have failed, we are left with manual editing of the Windows registry. This registry stores all information related to the operation of our operating system, including the connection of file extensions with programs for servicing them. Team REGEDIT inscribed in the window “search for programs and files” or "launch in the case of older versions of the operating system, it gives us access to the registry of our operating system. All operations performed in the registry (even not very complex ones regarding the .RVF file extension) have a significant impact on the operation of our system, so before making any modifications, you should make sure that a copy of the current registry is made. Due to the fact that the Windows registry is key to its operation, all operations carried out on it should be performed judiciously and consciously. Carelessly removing or modifying an inappropriate key may permanently damage the operating system.
  • Using the ctr+F key combination or the Edit menu and the “Find” option, find the extension you are interested in.RVF by entering it in the search engine window. Confirm by pressing OK or using the ENTER key.
  • Backup copy. It is extremely important to create a backup copy of the registry before making any changes to it. Every change has an impact on the operation of our computer. In extreme cases, erroneous modification of the registry may result in the system being unable to restart.
  • The value you are interested in regarding the extension can be manually edited by changing the keys assigned to the found extension.RVF. In this place, you can also independently create the desired entry with the extension a.RVF if it is not in the registry. All available options are located in the handy menu (right mouse button) or in the "Edit" menu after placing the cursor in the appropriate place on the screen.
  • After you finish editing the entry for the .RVF extension, close the system registry. The introduced changes will take effect after restarting the operating system.
